What Remains When Seasons Change
I sense the Lord calling His people to greater faithfulness in this season—not only in what we believe, but in how we live it out. Because the way we show up matters. How we love, serve, respond (which includes not responding), and how we carry ourselves through difficult circumstances.
Faithfulness is easy to talk about and preach when life is going according to plan. But what does faithfulness look like when it isn't? I’ve found myself asking the Lord for help with my need for control and my tendency to immediately ask, “Why is this happening?” In a season full of surprises, breakings, and blessings, the Lord has shown me that this warfare is widespread throughout the body of Christ.
Perhaps the question in this season isn't only WHY. He is teaching me HOW—how to walk through hard things well.
How do we show up when the season is hard? How do we love when loving requires sacrifice? How do we steward what’s in our hands when we’d rather be holding something different? How do we remain steadfast when we are weary? What does it look like to carry ourselves faithfully through difficult circumstances?
Be found faithful.
We expect God to be faithful to us. Are we equally concerned with being faithful to Him? We trust Him to keep His promises, answer our prayers, provide what we need, and remain present through every circumstance. Yet faithfulness is part of the character He is developing in us, too. Perhaps the invitation in this season isn't simply to ask God to change what is happening around us, but to allow Him to transform the way we walk through it.
Faithful in the Hard Places
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
I believe the Lord is highlighting how we show up in the seasons we didn't choose. How we love when loving requires sacrifice. How we serve when no one is watching. We often ask God to change our circumstances. But lately, I've sensed Him asking a different question:
Who are you becoming in the middle of them?
Over the past year, that question has become deeply personal for me. Walking alongside my mom through cancer has been one of the hardest and most humbling assignments of my life — and also one of the greatest honors. There have been appointments, difficult conversations, changing plans, unanswered questions, and moments when I desperately wished I could change the circumstances for her.
But the Lord has been teaching me that sometimes faithfulness looks remarkably ordinary. It looks like showing up. Sitting beside someone. Rearranging the schedule. Praying when you don't know what else to do. Choosing patience when you're tired. Loving someone well when the situation itself feels anything but good.
Some of life's most meaningful assignments don't arrive looking like opportunities. Sometimes they arrive looking like interruptions. And somewhere in the middle of caring for my mom, I began to understand that God wasn't only asking me to walk through something hard with her.
He is teaching me how to walk through hard things—well. Not perfectly. Not without emotion, exhaustion, or questions. He’s not asking me to pretend everything is alright. He’s not even asking me to be strong. What I get to learn in this season is how to walk with love, integrity, compassion, and a willingness to keep showing up.
Galatians reminds us not to grow weary in doing good because there is a harvest attached to faithfulness. Sometimes we see it around us. Other times, we plant seeds whose fruit will be seen by future generations. But there is also a harvest being produced within us. Every difficult act of obedience forms character. Every decision to love when it costs us something makes us more like Jesus. Sometimes the harvest is not only what God produces through us, but what He produces within us. Circumstances will change, but character remains.
And people are watching how we walk through hard things. Not because we need to pretend everything is okay, but because our peace, integrity, kindness, and hope can reveal the character of Jesus when circumstances don't. May the way we walk through hard things make Jesus easier for someone else to see.
Faithful With What Is in Your Hands
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…”
— Luke 16:10
Faithfulness isn't reserved for life's defining moments. Most often, it is built through the ordinary decisions no one celebrates. What has God placed in your hands today? Your time. Your talents. Your relationships. Your resources. Your words. Your opportunities to serve, encourage, lead, or simply be present.
We can become so focused on asking God what's next that we overlook what He has already placed in our hands. We can pray for greater influence while overlooking the person in front of us or wait for a significant Kingdom assignment while God gives us ordinary opportunities to demonstrate His character every day.
Faithfulness doesn't begin when God gives us more. It begins with what is already in our hands.
Perhaps the question isn't, “Lord, when will You give me something different?” but, “Lord, how can I honor You with what You've given me today?”
Faithfulness Becomes Legacy
“One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts.”
— Psalm 145:4
Walking through this season with my mom has also caused me to think differently about legacy. I've realized legacy isn't simply what we leave to people someday. It's what we are leaving in them right now.
People may forget what we accomplished, owned, or how busy we were. But they remember character. Who showed up. Who kept their word. Who chose kindness when it wasn't convenient. Who pointed them toward Jesus with a life that reflected Him.
And this is where generations matter. What was modeled for us becomes something we have the opportunity to carry forward. Faith becomes testimony. Wisdom becomes inheritance. Character becomes something our children witness long before they understand its value. Legacy isn't built at the end of our lives. We're building it today.
What are the people closest to you learning about God by watching your life?
Maybe this season isn't only about getting through what is hard. Maybe God is using it to teach us how to live faithfully within it. Keep showing up. Keep loving. Keep doing good. Keep stewarding what He has placed in your hands. And remember that your faithfulness may be speaking about Jesus in rooms where your words never could.
The circumstances will eventually change. But who we become in Christ will remain.
